Teresa Lashmet is an officer full of guts and humanity!
Very few officers have the Herculean courage and Buddhist compassion that Officer Teresa Lashmet embodies. She does the job so smoothly and with Zen-like inspiration.
Officer Lashmet has sworn into the Miami Police Department 30 years ago. She comes from a family which is deeply embedded in law enforcement. It inspired her to take the path less trodden. Her family members have served with the Highway Patrol. They fostered her and encourage her driving skills. She confidently says she is the first woman in her family to be in Law Enforcement as a Miami Police officer. Officer Teresa Lashmet completed her training in 2010 and went to CLEET (Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.) in Oklahoma. Before this she enjoyed a stint in parking control and dispatch in Cartage, Mo. She then took up a job at Buffalo Run Casino.
She just felt driven to become a patrol officer. She says: “I heard about the opening and I had tried everywhere in Missouri. I got down to the last interviews, in Aurora, Vernon County, Carl Junction and a bunch of different places I went and applied for, and they all hired a guy.”
Luckily, she topped the exams for the Miami Police officer post.
Officer Teresa Lashmet now lives with her husband, who is a truck driver and four children. They had to relocate as her elder daughter had to graduate. She adds that her husband and family has been such a strong supporter of her dream. About her CLEET class she says:
There were a total of seven women in her CLEET class. The others work in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. She says what her kids think about her: “, “I’ve always been kind of strict so now they say, ‘you’re going to tell other people what to do instead of us’. My son wants to be a police officer too.” She also feels there should be more women officers. Because they are dealing with women and children and it’s easier and comfortable to look up to a woman officer!
